Mary Krueckel Mona Vella: Everything is correct, except for the father of Charles John Nicholas. As I told you, the records at City Hall were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. As a result, people were asked to fill out affidavits to recoup the vital information which been lost. Mary Krunkle, by this time married to Ferdinand Nicholas, filled out an affidavit naming Ferdinand (known as "Fred") as the father. Charles John Nicholas, my husband's adoptive father, always knew that Fred was not his natural father. His brothers and sister, however, were Fred's natural children and thus were Charles's half siblings. When I heard this story from my husband's adoptive mother, Lillian Mahoney Nicholas, I asked what Charles's natural father's name was. She was evasive, but said his last name was "Wolf, I think." Charles was already deceased by the time I met my husband, so I never knew him.
